Hello, I’m Timothy Miller MA(RCA), PhD 👋️

I’m a designer-researcher working in the Design Department at Goldsmiths, University of London, in the Design School at London College of Communication (UAL), and with prior work as guest including at the Royal College of Art (RCA) and the Architectural Association (AA).

My research and teaching explores how the communication of design-related academic and other knowledge might be transformed, including how ironic Amazon reviews can help people discuss design ethics, and how PowerPoint presentation technical difficulties might help enliven academic presentations. In other research I explore why academics should make Hollywood movies.

During my research I employ quasi-design, which is an inventive approach to design research that draws on Design Theory, as well as Actor-Network Theory (ANT), Ethnomethodology, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Quasi-design was developed by formulating a novel approach to design research, and is informed by extended periods working with and for design studios and agencies, for some of the world’s largest and most well-known brands.

I’ve travelled and presented work globally, including at conferences and other engagements at Arizona State University (ASU), Lancaster University, Courtauld Institute of Art, University College London (UCL), University of Toronto, Salone del Mobile Milano, Hawaii Convention Centre, and more. In all, I’m passionate about the role of design in informing the positive development of the social world around us.
